چکیده

Deoxyribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid reassociation and deoxyribonucleic acid-ribosomal ribonucleic acid cistron similarity studies showed that the anaerobic, gram-positive cocci comprise a rather heterogeneous group of bacteria. The deoxyribonucleic acid-ribosomal ribonucleic acid hybridization studies distinguished seven groups. Groups 1 and 2 consisted of Peptostreptococcus magnus and Peptostreptococcus prevotii, respectively. Peptostreptococcus asaccharolyticus ATCC 14963T (T = type strain) and Peptostreptococcus indolicus ATCC 29427T formed a third group, and Peptostreptococcus asaccharolyticus DSM 20364 together with Hare group VIII strain NCTC 9820 formed group 4. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius DSM 20357 was more closely related to Eubacterium tenue ATCC 25553T and Clostridium lituseburense ATCC 25759T than to any of the other species studied. Peptostreptococcus micros strains DSM 2046gT and DSM 20367 together with strains belonging to Hare group IX formed group 6, and group 7 consisted of Peptostreptococcus pawulus DSM 20469T. Strains of different Hare groups were all assigned to one of the seven groups or to the genus Staphylococcus (Hare group VIIb strain NCTC 9819) or the genus Streptococcus (Hare group VIa strain NCTC 9806). The anaerobic cocci also have a diversity of murein structures. This is the first report showing that strains belonging to the same species have different murein types.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of clinically relevant Gram-positive anaerobic cocci collected over a three-year period in the Netherlands.

The susceptibility of 14 species of 115 Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC) was determined for 14 antibiotics. To assure correct identification, strains were genotypically identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization and sequencing. Susceptibility differences (MIC₅₀ and MIC₉₀) for penicillin G, clindamycin, tigecycline, levofloxacin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cefoxitin, ertapenem, merop...

Thirteen strains, representative of both subgroups,...

Studies on the spectrophotometric determination of DNA hybridization from renaturation rates.

The optical method of De Ley et al. (1970) for determining DNA/DNA homologies was reexamined. Several parameters such as incubation temperature, incubation time, DNA concentration and DNA fragment length were checked and the optimal conditions established. Hybridization data of several anaerobic Gram-positive cocci were compared with values obtained by the membrane filter technique. The agreeme...

Base sequence homology and renaturation studies of the deoxyribonucleic acid of extremely halophilic bacteria.

The genetic relatedness among various strains of halophilic bacteria has been assessed by deoxyribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA-DNA) duplex formation and ribosomal ribonucleic acid (RNA) hybridization. All of the strains of extremely halophilic rods are closely related, and the extent of divergence of base sequence is similar for the major and minor DNA components. Parallel experimen...

Development of a flow chart for identification of gram-positive anaerobic cocci in the clinical laboratory.

Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC) are a heterogeneous group of organisms that are isolated from clinical specimens more often than any group of anaerobic bacteria except Bacteroides species, yet many strains are still difficult or impossible to identify in the diagnostic laboratory. In this study, a total of 124 strains, including 13 reference strains of GPAC species and 111 isolates that ha...
